Fighting the Back to School Blues

It’s true that some children will absolutely love school–while others despise it! It’s hard getting back into the swing of things after days of lounging by the pool, sleeping in, family vacations, and days spent in your pj’s till noon. Going back to school can be a rude awakening to children at times. Sure many of seen their friends all day during the summer, but hey–they get to see them even more at school!…. You think that the kids would be excited!…–but no-school involves homework, studying, those dreadful subjects, and….worse–a mean teacher! How can we help our child fight those back to school blues?
- Get up early enough to start the day out with your child’s favorite breakfast. Turn on some fun music and help get the morning going. Start with a positive attitude.
- Reward your child for good work in school. If they get a good grade, or really perform a creative project in a subject, celebrate! Take them out for their favorite dinner, rent their favorite movie, or do an activity that they enjoy.
- Try to keep weekends less stressful. While their is housework to do or chores, take some time out of the day to kick back, relax, and not think about school for awhile. It doesn’t always have to be–all work and no play. –Remember that we are all only children once!
- Talk with your child about school. Ask him/her about their day. If they don’t want to discuss it right away–don’t press it. Try again later. Just show them that you care and want to be there for them…. (WARNING-This could get harder as they become teenagers!)
- Positive reinforcement always. While it’s hard to stay positive at all times…try. Promote the “school is cool,” no matter how corny it sounds. A positive attitude about school could help a child feel better about it….
